As I’m sure you’re aware, chocolate is toxic to dogs. But that doesn’t mean they should miss out on all the fun at Easter. Try these healthy Easter dog treats – they’re quick and easy to make and my dogs love them. Plus, they contain ingredients with numerous health benefits for your dog.
Materials
- Whisk or folk
- Small bowl or ramekin
- Silicone mould – I used this Easter egg mould, but you can use whatever shape you want or even an ice cube tray will do
Ingredients
- Plain unsweetened Kefir – if your dog is lactose intolerant you can get a dairy free kefir. This can also be substituted for natural yoghurt if desired.
- Spirulina
- Turmeric
- Beetroot powder
Health Benefits
Kefir
Kefir is a fermented milk drink which has many health benefits for your dog. It is a good source of protein, calcium, vitamins, and minerals. However, the main health benefits come from the probiotic content which promotes a healthy digestive system, enhances the immune system, and helps fight allergies and yeast infections.
How much should I give my dog?
Small dogs: 1 tsp - 1 tbsp
Medium dogs: 1 tbsp - 2 tbsp
Large dogs: 2 tbsp – 3 tbsp
Spirulina
Spirulina is a type of bacteria called cyanobacterium. It is high in protein and iron, and is rich in vitamins and minerals. Spirulina has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and can improve gut health, strengthen the immune system, reduce allergies, and help detoxification. It is also thought to have anti-cancer effects.
How much should I give my dog?
Recommended dose is 1/8 tsp per 10lbs or 4.5kg of body weight
Note: always use high quality, organic spirulina as contaminated spirulina may be toxic.
Turmeric
The active ingredient of turmeric is a compound called curcumin. Curcumin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-cancer properties. It can help dogs with arthritis or joint pain.
How much should I give my dog?
Recommended dose is 1/8 to 1/4 tsp per 10lbs or 4.5kg of body weight
Beetroot Powder
Beetroot is a superfood which is packed full of vitamins and minerals. Beetroot powder is antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and a natural detoxifier. It can reduce blood pressure, help with bone health and alleviate skin conditions.
How much should I give my dog?
Small dogs: ½ - 1 tsp
Medium to Large dogs: ½ tsp - 1tbsp
Recipe
For this recipe, I will only be adding a small amount of spirulina, turmeric and beetroot powder to get the desired pastel colour of the Easter treats. You can adjust the quantities of these additives as required.
- Add approx. 1/8 teaspoon of spirulina, turmeric or beetroot powder to a small bowl or ramekin.
- Add kefir (approx. 1/2 cup).
- Whisk to mix.
- Pour mixture into silicone mould.
- Place in the freezer until solid (~ 2 hours).
- Pop out of mold and give to your dog. Remaining treats can be stored in the freezer in a zip lock bag or container for 1-2 months.
