Measuring your Dog for a Harness

Creating a custom harness for your dog ensures a perfect fit, enhancing comfort and safety. To achieve this, precise measurements are crucial. Here's how you can measure your dog for a Y harness, ensuring the best fit.

Step-by-Step Measuring Instructions

  1. Sternum to Back (Measurement 1):
    • Start at the sternum, the indentation just below your dog's throat.
    • Measure to where the neck ends and the back begins, just before the shoulders. Feel for the bony area at the top of the shoulders as a guide.
    • Measure from the center of the sternum to the center of the back, just in front of the shoulders on one side. Avoid wrapping the tape around the neck to minimize errors.
  2. Shoulder to Chest Girth (Measurement 2):
    • Measure from the front of the shoulder (the base of the neck) to just behind the withers, which marks the start of the chest girth. Ensure this measurement ends horizontally behind the elbows.
  3. Chest Girth (Measurement 3):
    • Wrap the tape around the widest part of your dog’s ribcage, just behind the withers, down behind the front legs, and back up to the starting point.
  4. Sternum to Behind Front Legs (Measurement 4):
    • Measure from the top of the sternum between the front legs to approximately 3 cm or two fingers behind the front legs. This prevents rubbing under the armpits.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Use a soft measuring tape or a piece of string, then measure the string.
  • Ensure the tape is snug but not tight, and always measure the dog, not the fur.
  • Repeat each measurement 2-3 times for accuracy.
  • Your dog should be standing during measurements for the best results.
