How to Measure Your Dog for the Perfect Fit Collar

Getting the right collar size for your pup is important for their comfort and safety.  However, with so many cheaply-made options, it can be tough to find one that fits just right.  A collar that's too tight can choke them, whilst one that's too loose creates a risk of them slipping out of it.

That's why our handmade collars with quick release buckles are the ideal soluion. The sliding adjustment feature allows for precise and incremental adjustments, ensuring a snug but comfortable fit. Buckle collars, on the other hand, are limited to preset hole intervals, which may not provide the perfect fit.  Our collars come in widths of 15mm, 20mm and 25mm to ensure the collar is not only a suitable length, but also the right width for your dog.

As each collar is handmade to order it can be tailored to your dog's precise neck measurement. Properly measuring your dog's neck will help ensure you get the perfectly fitted collar.

Here are 5 simple steps to measure your dog for a new collar:

  1. Get a flexible tape measure or make your own using this free printable paper tape measure:

  2. With your dog standing, slip the tape measure around the base of their neck where the collar sits.
  3. The tape should fit snugly without being too tight. You should be able to slip two fingers between your dog's neck and the tape.
  4. Take the measurement and round up to the nearest centimeter increment.
  5. When ordering a new collar, consult our collar size guide and order the size range your dog's measurement falls within.

A few additional tips:

- As our collars are handmade, sizing may vary slightly between collars; avoid choosing a size where your dog’s measurement is at the extremes of the size range - for adult dogs aim for the middle of the range where possible.

- Measure your dog's neck periodically as they can gain or lose weight over time.

- Allow a little extra room for puppies that are still growing; aim for a size where your dog’s measurement is towards the lower end of the range.

- Consider going up a size for dogs with thick fur that may need more neck room.

By taking a few minutes to get your dog's neck size, you can select the perfect collar every time. A well-fitted collar will keep your furry friend safe and secure.
